Legendary Statesman and Guardian Deity
Takenouchi no Sukune is a legendary hero and statesman said to have lived during the first century in Japan, corresponding to the mid-Yayoi period. He is recorded in the Kojiki (ca. 712) and the Nihon Shoki (720), Japan's two earliest literary chronicles, and was later venerated as a kami.
According to tradition, he served as a loyal minister to five successive emperors — from Emperor Keikō through Emperor Nintoku — spanning an extraordinary length of time that itself became a symbol of his legendary nature. He is also regarded as the ancestral founder of several powerful aristocratic clans, including the Ki, Kose, Heguri, Kazuraki, and Soga.
His name carries the meaning of "brave retainer of the inner court," and the title Sukune is an honorific. Revered for his unwavering loyalty and longevity, Takenouchi no Sukune came to be enshrined as a divine protector, embodying the virtues of faithful service and enduring strength.
