Emperor Jimmu himself is said to have prayed at this spot for victory before his legendary eastern expedition to conquer and unify Japan, making it one of the nation's most ancient shrines.

The sacred spring here gave the entire city of Izumi its name. When Empress Jingū visited in 200 CE, crystal-clear water suddenly gushed from the ground, delighting her so much she declared it holy.

The shrine complex includes a 1605 building rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori that now holds Important Cultural Property status, housing the combined deities of five major regional shrines under one roof.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi had water from this shrine's spring transported all the way to Osaka Castle for his tea ceremonies, prizing its exceptional purity and taste above all other sources.
