Kongobu-ji is the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon school. Its official explanation treats all of Koyasan as Issan Temple Grounds: the mountain currently has 117 temples, 52 of which provide temple lodging. Koyasan was opened by Kobo Daishi in the early Heian period.
