What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Sunshine 60 is a 60-story skyscraper in Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima, Tokyo, forming the core of the Sunshine City complex. When it was completed in 1978 at 239.7 meters, it was the tallest building in Asia, a title it kept until 1985. It stayed the tallest in Japan until the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building was finished.

The observation deck on the 60th floor, called Tenbō Park, looks out over the city, and on a clear day the view reaches as far as 100 kilometers. The elevators to the deck travel at 600 meters per minute, the fastest in the world until 1993, and take about 35 seconds from the basement to the 60th floor. Restaurants occupy the 58th and 59th floors. The tower stands on the site of the former Sugamo Prison, and a peace memorial stands in nearby Higashi-Ikebukuro Chūō Park.
