What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Nakasu is an entertainment district on a narrow island between the Naka and Hakata rivers in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is the largest such district in western Japan, with about 3,500 restaurants and other establishments, and reportedly more than 60,000 visitors every night.

Yatai food stalls stand along the Naka River, and the Fukuhaku Deai Bridge offers a view of the neon signs beside the water. The district lies within walking distance of Tenjin, next to the Kawabata shopping arcade and Canal City Hakata, and Nakasu-Kawabata Station is the nearest subway stop. The island dates to around 1600, when Kuroda Nagamasa, lord of the Fukuoka domain, had bridges built to link Fukuoka and Hakata, and 18 bridges now cross the rivers around it.
