What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Ikebukuro is a district of Toshima, Tokyo, centered on Ikebukuro Station, the third-busiest railway station in Japan. It is one of the city's major shopping and entertainment areas, with the Seibu and Tōbu department stores on opposite sides of the station and the Sunshine City complex to the east.

Sunshine City includes an aquarium and cat cafés, and women's anime and manga shops gather along Otome Road. West of the station, Chinese restaurants and shops have grown with the local Chinese community since the 1980s. A small owl statue, the Ikefukurō, is a well-known meeting spot; its name puns on the district's name, which means 'pond bag'. The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, the Hareza Ikebukuro complex with eight theaters, and Jiyū Gakuen Myōnichikan, a school building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1921 and open to visitors, add a cultural side.
