What makes this place special?

At a Glance

Daikanyama, formally Daikanyama-chō, is a neighborhood in Shibuya, Tokyo, known for its small boutiques and nicknamed 'the Brooklyn of Tokyo'. It is served by Daikan-yama Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, and in everyday use the name also covers the surrounding streets toward Hachiman-dōri and Kyū-Yamate-dōri.

Patisseries, restaurants and cafés sit among quiet residential streets alongside the boutiques. The area began taking on its stylish character in the late 1980s, and since 2000 it has been regarded as a fashion district second only to Harajuku and Omotesandō. That year the Daikanyama Address complex opened on the site of the Dōjunkai Daikanyama Apartments, a 36-building housing estate that stood until 1996, and its tower is the neighborhood's landmark. Daikanyama T-SITE and Saigōyama Park are also nearby.
