Goddess of the Sea
Tagorihime-no-Mikoto is a Shinto goddess revered as one of the three Munakata goddesses, born from the exchange of sacred objects between Amaterasu and Susanoo in the mythological age. She is enshrined at Okitsu-miya, the offshore sanctuary of Munakata Grand Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, and is regarded as a powerful guardian of those who cross the sea.
Her worship has been deeply tied to maritime safety and the protection of seafarers for over a thousand years, and the Munakata shrine complex where she resides has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Offerings and prayers dedicated to her reflect the vital importance of safe sea passage in ancient Japanese society.
Among the three Munakata deities, Tagorihime is often associated with the open ocean, and her remote island sanctuary underscores her role as a goddess of the deep sea. Her name and veneration appear in some of the oldest records of Japanese religion, including the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki.
