Goddess of the Sea and Waterways
Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto is one of the three Munakata goddesses venerated in Shinto tradition, born from the divine exchange between Amaterasu and Susanoo. She presides over the sea and waterways, and is regarded as a protective deity for those who travel across or depend upon the water.
She is enshrined primarily at Nakatsu-miya on Oshima Island, part of the Munakata Grand Shrine complex in Fukuoka Prefecture, a site recognized for its extraordinary sacred heritage. Fishermen and seafarers have long sought her blessing for safe passage and bountiful catches.
Her name is commonly understood to mean "lady of the rushing waters" or "princess of the roiling straits," reflecting her close association with powerful, turbulent seas. Together with her sisters Ichikishimahime and Tagirihime, she forms a triad of water goddesses whose collective worship has persisted across many centuries.
