Buddha of the Future
Miroku Buddha, known in Sanskrit as Maitreya, is venerated in all schools of Buddhism as the future Buddha destined to appear in this world. His name derives from the Sanskrit word for loving-kindness, and in Tibetan Buddhism he is honored as the "Noble Loving One." He is recognized as the direct successor to Gautama Buddha and, as the fifth and final Buddha of the current cosmic age, will re-establish the Dharma at a time when its teachings have fallen into neglect.
According to tradition, Maitreya currently dwells in Tushita heaven, awaiting the appointed era of his descent to Earth. Despite numerous historical figures claiming to embody him, mainstream Buddhist traditions hold that his true appearance as a Buddha has not yet occurred. Throughout history, many devotees have reported visions of and encounters with Maitreya, and Mahayana Buddhism traditionally credits him as the fountainhead of the Yogacara school through the revelation of key philosophical texts.
In Japanese Buddhism, Miroku is depicted with the lotus flower and a sacred water vessel as his symbolic attributes. He is widely venerated at temples across Japan, where his image often appears as a contemplative bodhisattva seated in a pensive pose, embodying the compassionate wisdom he will bring to humanity at his future advent.
