Guardian Deity of Kumano
Kumano Fusumi no Okami is a deity associated with the sacred Kumano region of the Kii Peninsula in Japan, one of the country's most revered pilgrimage destinations. This divinity is venerated within the broader tradition of Kumano worship, which blends Shinto and Buddhist elements into a distinctive syncretic faith.
The deity is connected to the rich spiritual heritage of the Kumano Sanzan, the three grand shrines of Kumano that have drawn pilgrims for over a millennium. Devotees have historically traveled the ancient Kumano Kodō pilgrimage routes to seek blessings of protection and spiritual purification.
As a figure of the Kumano tradition, this deity embodies the fusion of native kami veneration with Buddhist teachings that characterizes the Kumano faith, reflecting the deep syncretism that defines much of Japanese religious practice.
