The Choku額門 gate and Tonshōji Hall uniquely enshrine emperor, deity, and Buddha together in one structure, a format found nowhere else in Japan.
This temple houses the only imperial mausoleum in all of Shikoku, where Emperor Sutoku was buried after dying in exile following his defeat in the Hōgen Rebellion of 1156.
