The temple displays petrified wood over two million years old that has transformed into stone resembling marble through burial under sediment and ash.

In 822, Emperor Saga ordered monk Kukai to build this temple after the ascetic En no Gyoja exorcized a long-nosed tengu spirit from Cape Ashizuri.
