On New Year's Day, the shrine serves kinpaku miki, sake containing real gold leaf flakes, to visitors making their first shrine visit of the year. The tradition connects to the shrine's role as protector of sake brewers.
The three modernist gardens here were legendary designer Mirei Shigemori's final project. He died in March 1975 before finishing them, so his son Kanto completed the work that same year.

In 965, Emperor Murakami designated this as one of only 16 shrines in all of Japan to receive Imperial messengers reporting important national events. It held first rank status among government shrines until 1946.
