Tairyu-ji earned the nickname 'Koya of the West' for its high elevation and prestigious history, comparing it to Mount Koya, the sacred headquarters of Shingon Buddhism.

The historic Kamomichi pilgrim path to Tairyu-ji, dating back to 1700s Edo Period maps, fell into ruin for two centuries before local communities restored it and earned National Historical Site status.
