Look for the hidden Christian lantern (kirishitan lantern) in the garden while you tour the grounds, a subtle stone object that reflects the Edo period when Christians secretly practiced their faith by disguising religious symbols as Buddhist and Shinto objects. This artifact connects directly to the temple's complex religious history and is easy to miss without guidance.
Book zazen classes in advance if you want to join the English-language meditation sessions led by deputy head priest Zenryu Kawakami, who lived in the United States and can explain the practice clearly to non-Japanese speakers.
If you visit during azalea season (typically late spring), pay attention to the plants in the front garden, which were planted by D.T.
Plan to spend at least two hours at Shunkoin to fully experience the temple, as the standard visit includes a guided tour of the grounds, meditation instruction, and a matcha tea ceremony with Japanese sweets at the end.
Wear clothing that allows you to sit comfortably cross-legged on tatami mats during zazen meditation, as tight pants or skirts will restrict your movement and distract from the practice.
Ask the deputy head priest or your guide about the Nanban-ji bell (a Portuguese Jesuit bell from 1577 now housed at the temple) and the fusuma paintings by Kanō Eigaku during your tour, as these are National Important Cultural Properties that deserve more than a glance. The staff can provide context about how these objects survived Japan's religious upheaval and what they reveal about the temple's role in preserving religious diversity.
