Ryōan-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple in northwest Kyoto, founded in 1450 by Hosokawa Katsumoto on a former villa. Known for its kare-sansui dry rock garden, it belongs to the Myōshin-ji school and is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site.
