概要
The shrine attracts 1.7 million visitors annually, making it the largest shrine in Shiga Prefecture. During the August Lantern Festival, over 10,000 lanterns illuminate the grounds from 7pm to 9:30pm.
The shrine's wooden ladle talisman (Otaga-shakushi) from the 8th century is allegedly the origin of the Japanese word 'otamajakushi' (tadpole), which literally means 'honorable ladle'.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi donated 10,000 koku (a daimyo's annual revenue) to this shrine while desperately praying for his mother's life to be extended. His devotion made Taga Taisha famous as a longevity shrine.
