Over 3,000 hydrangea bushes bloom around the temple each June, earning it the nickname 'Hydrangea Temple' and creating a striking contrast between delicate pink and purple flowers and the stern stone Buddha.
The Buddha was carved during the third major pyroclastic flow from Mount Aso 120,000 years ago, while most other rock Buddhas in Bungo-Ono were carved into stone from a much more recent eruption 90,000 years later.
