Butsumoku-ji è dedicato a Dainichi Nyorai, la divinità principale del tempio.
The temple's name literally means 'Buddha Tree Temple' because Kobo Daishi carved the main statue of Dainichi Nyorai directly into a living camphor tree, embedding the sacred jewel between its eyebrows.
