De un vistazo
The temple operates tree burial grounds with scenic views, allowing visitors to rest among nature while remaining accessible by car, a practical solution to Hayama's coastal terrain.
As a Shingon Buddhist temple affiliated with Koyasan, Choun-ji maintains the esoteric traditions of Japan's most influential Buddhist sect while serving the modern seaside community of Hayama.

If you're coming to pay respects or participate in the temple's services, note that the temple handles formal rites and memorial ceremonies, so calling ahead at 046-875-2609 ensures you won't accidentally arrive during a private service or family memorial.
Plan to visit on a weekday morning if you want a quieter experience for prayer or reflection, since this is an active temple that handles perpetual memorial services and attracts visitors seeking the ward-evil blessings of Fudo Myoo throughout the week.
The temple sits about 5 minutes on foot from the Nagae bus stop (served by buses from JR Zushi Station and Keikyu Shin-Zushi Station), making it accessible without a car, though the walk is uphill so wear comfortable shoes if you're taking public transit.
The principal deity, Fudo Myoo, is designated a Hayama Town Cultural Asset, so if you're interested in photographing the statue or altar, ask the temple staff first out of respect for the sacred nature of the work and their documentation policies.
The temple offers tree burial and perpetual memorial services alongside its traditional ward-evil prayer function, so if you're visiting out of curiosity about modern Buddhist practices rather than seeking a blessing, mention this to staff when you arrive so they can direct you appropriately.
