The temple has switched Buddhist sects three times: starting as Hossō, becoming Tendai in 857, and finally converting to Sōtō Zen in 1647.
In 1774, priest Guden carved 1,553 stone Arhat statues across Mount Nokogiri, transforming the entire mountain into a sacred Buddhist complex.
