Arrive early on the 8th of each month if you want to observe or participate in the monthly ritual (月次祭) held at 9 AM, which is open to all visitors and offers a chance to experience an active Shinto ceremony rather than just viewing the shrine grounds.
Plan to visit during spring or winter if you want to see the peony garden in bloom, as it operates seasonally around the Minamoto Pond and requires a separate 500 yen admission fee.
If you're interested in the sacred Chin-ka-seki stone (鎮懐石), the shrine's most significant spiritual treasure associated with Empress Jingū, ask staff for guidance on where to view it or learn more about its history, as it's central to the shrine's spiritual identity but not always immediately obvious to casual visitors.
Check the shrine's official calendar before visiting, as the gift shop (授与所) operates on specific days only and is not open daily.
Bring cash when visiting, as the shrine's gift shop and prayer services may not accept card payments, and you'll want to be prepared if you decide to purchase amulets, get a goshuin, or make an offering.
Visit during the spring festival season (around April) to experience the shrine's role as one of the Zenkoji Plain's three major spring festivals, when the grounds come alive with traditional celebrations and you'll see the shrine as the community experiences it throughout the year.
