Matsudaira Shungaku, the feudal lord enshrined here, became known as the 'Restoration Hero' for leading major reforms during Japan's turbulent final years of the Edo period.

The shrine's modest modern design was recognized in 2022 by DOCOMOMO, an international architectural organization, as an important example of modern Japanese shrine architecture worth preserving.

Built in 1943, this shrine's main hall was constructed entirely of cypress wood, making it architecturally unusual for its modern concrete reconstruction after wartime destruction.

Fukui Shrine was completely destroyed in the July 1945 air raid on Fukui, then painstakingly rebuilt starting in 1954 to become a spiritual center for the city's recovery.
