Though commoners were normally banned from entering daimyo estates, the Sakura clan made a special exception, allowing townspeople to visit this shrine once a year on the first Horse Day of spring.
The current shrine building dates only to 2008, after the original was demolished in 1960 to make way for the Hibiya subway line construction beneath it.
The shrine earned its reputation as a fire prevention deity after the estate and surrounding area miraculously escaped fires for many years, despite tea plants encircling the grounds.
Unlike the other six deities in the Nihonbashi Seven Lucky Gods pilgrimage, Hotei is the only one believed to have been a real historical person who actually lived in ancient China.
