The temple's pond garden represents the Western Ocean that separates our world from Amida's paradise. Worshippers gaze across the water at the main hall, symbolically looking toward the afterlife.

The temple houses a hidden statue of Kichijo-ten, a plump goddess so beautiful that Heian monks reportedly fell in love with her. The Tale of Genji even jokes about her being too pious to pursue.
