The Lion's Cave (Shishi no iwaya) at the back looks like a lion's open mouth. Kōbō Daishi studied here after returning from China and dedicated five treasure bells to the temple.

This mountain is considered one of Japan's three largest sacred sites. Pilgrims still practice a water ritual called Suikyogi, where sacred water flowing from the summit cleanses wooden prayer tablets.
