Butsumoku-ji est dédié à Dainichi Nyorai, la divinité principale du temple.
The temple's name literally means 'Buddha Tree Temple' because Kobo Daishi carved the main statue of Dainichi Nyorai directly into a living camphor tree, embedding the sacred jewel between its eyebrows.
The temple houses Japan's oldest statue of Kobo Daishi with a dated inscription inside, consecrated in 1315. The inscription was discovered within the statue itself, making it a rare historical treasure.
