Hiraizumi is a town in Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan. It flourished in the 12th century as the political and cultural center of the Northern Fujiwara clan, who ruled much of northern Honshu. They built temples and gardens to embody Pure Land Buddhism. The town declined after 1189, when Minamoto no Yoritomo destroyed the Fujiwara base. In 2011, “Hiraizumi – Temples, Gardens and Archaeological Sites Representing the Buddhist Pure Land” joined the UNESCO World Heritage List. Key sites include Chuson-ji temple, whose Konjikidō Golden Hall (1124) enshrines the Fujiwara leaders, and Motsu-ji with a large Pure Land garden around a pond.
