Deity of the future Buddha
Herald of a better age, Miroku Bosatsu is Buddhism’s future Buddha, revered across Japan. When Shakyamuni’s teachings fade, he will appear on earth to renew the Dharma and lead beings with the power of loving‑kindness.
Scripture says Miroku now dwells in Tuṣita heaven, awaiting the right time to become the fifth Buddha of this kalpa. His name comes from maitrī (Pali: metta), loving‑kindness. He is also called Ajitā, and in Tibetan Pakpa Jampa. Mahāyāna tradition even credits him with revealing Yogācāra treatises such as the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra and the Madhyāntavibhāga. Visitors encounter his images, inscriptions, and dedications in temples and museums, often emphasizing serene patience and hope.
Today, Miroku embodies a living hope that compassion will return the world to balance. Japanese schools honor him while rejecting any would‑be Miroku until the Dharma truly declines. His promise of a renewed teaching keeps his gentle, future‑facing presence vivid in daily devotion.
