Call ahead to book the etoki (illustrated storytelling) performance, as the temple accepts visitors by appointment only and can accommodate as few as one person.
Auf einen Blick
The temple's signature etoki depicts the Karukaya Dōshin and Ishidōmaru tale: a prince who abandoned his son to become a monk, only to be reunited with him decades later as an adult seeker of enlightenment.
The temple will travel to perform etoki outside its walls if requested, making this one of Japan's few temples that brings its ancient oral tradition directly to communities rather than waiting for pilgrims to arrive.

Call ahead to book the etoki (illustrated storytelling) performance, as the temple accepts visitors by appointment only and can accommodate as few as one person.
If you speak Japanese or travel with a Japanese speaker, ask the temple staff about arranging an etoki performance at an off-site location.
Plan your visit on a weekday morning if possible, since the temple operates by appointment and weekday slots are less likely to be booked by tour groups.
Bring a notebook or prepare to take mental notes during the etoki performance, as the storyteller's delivery relies on verbal narration paired with hand-painted scrolls depicting the Karukaya Dōshin and Ishidōmaru tale.
Ask permission before photographing the etoki scrolls or the Ten Kings imagery during your visit. The temple preserves these religious artworks as sacred teaching tools, and respecting this practice ensures the monks remain welcoming to future visitors.
