Visit between November and April is not possible due to seasonal closure, so plan your trip for May through October when the shrine is open.
Auf einen Blick
Only 3.5km upstream from Kappabashi Bridge, this shrine sits on land originally written as 'Kamigaki-uchi' (divine enclosure), which is the actual origin of Kamikochi's name.
Myojin Pond beside the shrine is fed by sacred spring water blessed by the mountain god, and this same water flows downstream to nourish the entire Azumino region's farmland.

Pay the 500 yen admission fee (200 yen for children) to access Myojin Pond, which sits directly beside the shrine and is considered sacred.
Bring sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes rather than casual sneakers, as the 3.5km walk from Kappa Bridge along the Azusa River involves uneven terrain and can be muddy depending on recent weather.
Understand that this is one of three sacred sites dedicated to Hotakami-no-Mikoto: the main shrine (Honmiya) is in Azumino town, the Okunomiya sits by Myojin Pond where you are visiting, and the Minemiya shrine sits at the summit of Oku-Hotaka Peak.
Respect the quiet, contemplative atmosphere by keeping conversations low and avoiding loud photography or selfie-taking near the shrine buildings and pond.
