Plan at least two hours here. Nishi Hongan-ji is an active head temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect, so you may encounter ongoing services or pilgrims alongside other visitors. If that tradition interests you, budget even more time.

The grounds hold several National Treasure buildings worth tracking down. Prioritize the Karamon gate, the Goei-do and Amida-do halls, and the north Noh stage. They are spread across the complex, so a slow loop rather than a quick pass makes sense.
