The temple's founder studied Zen in Song China and returned to Japan in 1246 on the same ship as Lanxi Daolong, the famous priest who established Kamakura's Kencho-ji temple.

Two remarkably realistic wooden statues of priests from 1329 sit in the temple, crafted by a carpenter named Hyobu. They show an unusual level of detail compared to later sculptures of that era.
