Resumo
The Matsudaira clan ruled Ueda for over 160 years across seven generations during the Edo period, longer than any other daimyo family held the castle.
A spirit shrine dedicated to the first Matsudaira lord was established in Kyoto at Kinkaku-ji temple before this shrine was built, making it a branch shrine with roots in the imperial capital.

Bring a small notebook or use your phone's notes app if you want to record details about the deities enshrined here, as the shrine honors three different daimyo clans (Sanada, Sengoku, and Matsudaira) across different eras, and understanding which lord corresponds to which period enriches your visit.
Take time to read the shrine's historical plaques or ask staff about the Matsudaira clan's connection to the Tokugawa shogunate, since this shrine originated as a memorial to the Matsudaira ancestors and offers a less obvious angle on samurai history compared to the castle itself.
Visit on a weekday morning to experience the shrine in relative quiet, since it sits within Ueda Castle's former main enclosure and draws steady foot traffic from castle tourists on weekends.
If you're collecting shrine stamps (goshuin), check whether the shrine offers direct calligraphy or pre-printed versions, as visitor reviews mention receiving hand-written stamps here, and availability may depend on when the shrine office is staffed.
