Battles from the Genpei War took place in the Ikuta forest behind the shrine. Two Noh plays, Ebira and Ikuta Atsumori, retell these battles and are performed annually at the shrine's Autumn Festival.

The shrine's goddess Wakahirume is the deity of fabric and weaving. Because threads are entwined together to make cloth, she's worshiped for bringing people together, making this a popular power spot for relationships.
