概要
After WWII, the U.S. occupation forced this shrine to change its name to Shirasagi-nomiya, but locals reverted it back in 1951 when Japan regained independence, keeping both names displayed.
Built on the grounds of former samurai residences within Himeji Castle's inner bailey, this shrine was originally just an annual memorial service in a garden before becoming a formal building in 1938.

Plan to spend 20-30 minutes here rather than rushing through, as the shrine's value lies in quiet reflection on its purpose as a memorial rather than sightseeing speed.
Visit on a weekday morning rather than weekends to experience the shrine's peaceful atmosphere without the tourist crowds that gather after visits to nearby Himeji Castle.
If you want your goshuin stamp placed directly in your collection book, request the single-page version instead of the double-page option, which is given on loose paper and harder to preserve.
Ask a monk for a blessing if you wish, as this service is available upon request and adds a personal spiritual dimension to your visit that many casual tourists miss.
Take time to read about the 56,998 war dead enshrined here from southwestern Hyogo Prefecture across multiple conflicts from 1868 onward, as understanding this context deepens the solemnity of your visit and distinguishes this shrine from typical tourist stops.

Over 56,000 war dead from across western Hyogo Prefecture are enshrined here, from conflicts spanning the Boshin War through WWII, making it the only shrine in Himeji where the Emperor always offers prayers.
Facing declining interest in pre-1945 wars, the shrine has reinvented itself as a wedding venue, blending its solemn memorial purpose with modern celebration in an unexpected pivot.
