Maegami-ji est un temple bouddhiste Shingon lié au Shugendo, la tradition ascétique de montagne.
Emperor Kanmu prayed here to be healed from illness in the 8th century, and when his wish was granted, he built seven main buildings and gave the temple its name, Konjikiin Maegamiji.
