Auf einen Blick
Founded in 681 as a Hosso temple called Jihiji, it was completely transformed into a Soto Zen temple in 1500 when Imagawa Ujichika rebuilt it with seven main halls.
When Tokugawa Ieyasu was held hostage here as a boy, the temple's abbot secretly took him to visit his father's grave in Okazaka, breaking the rules of his captivity.

Plan your visit for spring if you want to see the temple's celebrated cherry blossoms, which draw many visitors to the grounds. If you prefer a quieter experience, visit on a weekday morning rather than weekends when the crowds peak.
Arrive by bus from Shizuoka Station (about 20 minutes on the Sento Jishinoio line), then walk 15 minutes from the Shiinoosouth stop.
Visit the grounds to see the moss-covered grave of Imagawa Ujichika, the warlord who revived this temple in 1500. The temple also preserves a life-sized wooden statue of Ujichika carved 460 years ago, which offers a tangible connection to the Sengoku period.
Bring sturdy walking shoes because the temple sits in a green mountain area with uneven terrain and the approach involves a 15-minute walk uphill from the bus stop.
Respect the temple's status as a place of active Buddhist practice by keeping your voice low and moving slowly through the grounds.
Ask permission before photographing the temple buildings or grounds, as this is a working Buddhist sanctuary. The wooden statue of Imagawa Ujichika is normally kept non-public, but special viewing opportunities may be arranged during commemorative events like the 500th anniversary memorial held in 2026.
