Hotoku Ninomiya Jinja

The shrine sits within Odawara Castle's grounds, creating an unusual pairing where visitors can explore both samurai history and agricultural philosophy in one location, connected by peaceful gardens and a traditional pond.

Despite being relatively young compared to ancient shrines, Hōtoku Ninomiya Jinja holds Beppyō status, a special designation given to only 353 shrines in Japan that are considered historically or culturally remarkable.

Ninomiya Sontoku is often depicted carrying firewood while reading, symbolizing his belief in combining physical labor with learning. This image became iconic in promoting education and diligence throughout modern Japan.

The shrine was founded in 1894 to honor Ninomiya Sontoku, a famous agricultural reformer who revolutionized farming and economic practices in 19th century Japan through his philosophy of hard work and repaying kindness.
