Visit between mid-to-late June to see the 50,000+ hydrangeas in full bloom across 10 different varieties, but expect crowds and a 500 yen admission fee during this peak season.
The temple is about a 10-minute walk from JR Kita-Kogane Station on the JR Joban Line (roughly 40 minutes from Ueno Station in Tokyo), and you'll enter through a distinctive stone arch marked with Chokosan and Hondoji pillars.
Plan to spend at least 90 minutes walking the temple grounds slowly, as the highest density of hydrangeas and photo-worthy spots are concentrated along three specific paths: the route behind Myoro Hall, the straight approach from Zoushido, and the path past Zuihomon gate back to the reception desk.
Bring an offering or purchase one from the florist shop along the approach street before entering the temple grounds, as flowers and incense are customary when visiting the main hall and the Well of Birth Water of Nizo Bodhisattva, which is particularly important if you're seeking blessings for safe childbirth or child-rearing.
If you're visiting during hydrangea season, request the special red seal (goshuin) at the temple office, as this seasonal version features a hydrangea pattern and is only available from mid-to-late June.
Visit in late November when around 1,500 maple trees turn brilliant red and yellow, creating a completely different aesthetic from the hydrangea season, or come after a rare snowfall when the temple grounds are blanketed in white.
