Though founded in 829, the temple was completely destroyed during Shikoku's invasion but rebuilt in the 1590s. The main hall still displays the hollyhock crest of the Matsudaira family, who ruled Takamatsu domain.
The temple houses Japan's oldest known statue of Kangiten (a deity of bliss and fortune) in its Seitendo Hall, making it a significant pilgrimage site beyond the Shikoku 88 temple circuit.
