Until 1872, women were completely barred from Mount Koya's sacred grounds for over 1,000 years, yet they still practiced Shingon Buddhism by praying at seven separate women's halls on the mountain's approaches.
Nyonindo is the sole survivor of seven women's temples that once ringed Mount Koya, making it the last physical reminder of a thousand-year tradition that excluded women from one of Japan's holiest mountains.

Plan your visit to Nyonindo as part of a larger Koyasan pilgrimage rather than as a standalone stop, since the temple is small and can be seen in 15-20 minutes.
