Banryū (播隆, 1786–1840) was a Jōdo-shū Buddhist monk and mountaineer of the late Edo period, known to followers as Banryu Shonin (播隆上人). He is remembered for ascetic practice at sacred mountain and waterfall sites, including Mount Yari, Mount Katachi, Mount Igi, Mount Asama, and Metoba Falls. His life is linked to mountain worship and Buddhist austerities in Japan’s religious landscape. Banryū is significant as a priest who combined Jōdo-shū devotion with severe mountain asceticism, a tradition tied to pilgrimage and training in remote natural settings. No major temple complex or UNESCO site is associated with Banryū himself, but his legacy belongs to the history of Japanese mountain religion and pilgrim practice.
