The shrine attracts 1.7 million visitors annually, making it the largest shrine in Shiga Prefecture. During the August Lantern Festival, over 10,000 lanterns illuminate the grounds from 7pm to 9:30pm.

The shrine's wooden ladle talisman (Otaga-shakushi) from the 8th century is allegedly the origin of the Japanese word 'otamajakushi' (tadpole), which literally means 'honorable ladle'.
