Rozan-ji was moved to its current Teramachi Street site in 1573 during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's reorganization of Kyoto.
The current main structure dates to 1794, rebuilt after the Kyoto fires of 1708 and 1788 using part of the Sentō Imperial Palace.
