Resumo
Founded in 1812 by a merchant from Ōmi Province, Abashiri Jinga was originally a small shrine built to protect fishing grounds at the river mouth before the city even existed.
The shrine's main festival falls on August 15th and draws the devotion of over 17,000 households across the Kitami coastal region, making it the primary guardian shrine for the entire area.

Visit on August 15th for the annual festival (例祭日), when the shrine comes alive with traditional celebrations and you can experience the community's deep connection to the three goddesses worshipped here.
Take the JR Kushiro Line to Katsuramachi Station and walk just 3 minutes to reach the shrine, making it easily accessible without a car.
Look for the red lacquer roof and traditional architectural details that date back to the Taisho period renovation, and take time to observe the shrine's historical plaques and sacred objects on display.
Bring coins (small denominations work best) if you plan to make an offering or purchase omikuji (fortune-telling slips), as many shrines don't have card payment systems.
