Plan the exact route from hotel door to destination entrance. A station may have lifts while the exit nearest your hotel has stairs. Check the facilities that matter to you before booking, and confirm equipment dimensions or assistance directly with the operator.
| Trip element | Check before booking | Why generic “accessible” is not enough |
|---|---|---|
| Station | Lift route, platform gap/step, accessible toilet, exit opening hours | A lift can be at a different exit or inside the gates |
| Train | Wheelchair space, boarding assistance, scooter dimensions | Rules differ by operator and train type |
| Hotel | Step-free room route, door/bath dimensions, shower setup, bed height | “Barrier-free room” layouts vary widely |
| Sight | Surface, slopes, stairs, toilet, companion access, rental equipment | Historic sites often have real terrain limits |
| Taxi / transfer | Vehicle type and whether your chair/equipment can be carried | A standard taxi may not suit a power chair |
On arrival: At a major station, speak to staff before the gate if you need boarding help. Give the train, destination, and connection; they can coordinate assistance far better when they know the exact route.
Trains, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters
Rail staff regularly assist passengers, but the right procedure is operator- and route-specific. For mobility scooters on Shinkansen and limited-express trains, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism sets structural criteria for designated wheelchair spaces; implementation still varies by railway. Read the MLIT scooter-on-trains guidance, then contact the operator with your chair’s dimensions and the exact service.
| If you use… | Ask the operator… |
|---|---|
| Manual wheelchair | Can staff provide ramp/boarding assistance at both ends? Is advance notice required? |
| Power chair / scooter | What are the permitted dimensions, turning requirements, and carriage space? |
| Folding mobility aid | Can it travel as luggage, and is the connection step-free? |
| Hearing/vision access needs | What visual/audio information is available at the station and on the train? |

Ask better hotel and venue questions
Copy, customise, and send this before you commit:
“I use a [manual wheelchair / power chair / mobility scooter] measuring [length × width]. Can you confirm the step-free route from street to room, the room/bathroom door widths, shower or bath access, bed arrangement, accessible toilet location, and whether staff can assist at arrival?”
For a sight, ask for the route, not an adjective: entrance surface, steps/slope, accessible toilet, wheelchair rental details, companion policy, and whether construction or weather changes access. The property owns that answer; a directory can help you find options but cannot guarantee today’s conditions.
